What is a Dental Implant ?
A dental implant is an artificial replacement tooth root. It is used to hold a restoration to replace teeth since it provides a firm foundation for removable or permanent replacement teeth which are made to closely resemble the natural teeth. Dental implants are made of titanium.
For a long time, the only reliable treatment options which have been available for tooth loss have been dentures plates and bridges. This has been a great setback to dental care improvements as there are many people who lose their teeth due to various injuries and accidents, gum diseases like gingivitis and tooth decay. Fortunately, the introduction of dental implants has brought relief to many tooth victims; you can now have a tooth replacement that looks just as if it were natural.
Dental implants have many merits which makes it the most convenient solution for teeth replacement.
It comes with improved comfort. This is so because it makes the replacement teeth very strong, firm and enable it work just like a natural one. Dental implants have good appearance and look natural. This has also been improved with the fact that they are made to fuse with the bone and create permanent and reliably stable bonds. Another good thing about dental implants is that they do not use other teeth as support. They stand alone and prevent any alteration of the nearby teeth. This has great advantages to the oral health of the teeth. These dental implants have perfect fitting that do not interfere with your speech or use additional adhesives just to keep your teeth intact. They also last long, with many years of life-time and are easier to eat with.
There are two types of dental implants which are already in use by periodontists. These are
Endosteal dental implant
This is the most common type of dental implant used today. It is done in the jaw bone and used mostly with patients with removable dentures and bridges. A blade or cylinder is surgically inserted in the jawbone.
This is placed on the jaw and uses a mesh of metals protruding from the gum to hold firmly the inserted prosthesis. Subperiosteal is normally recommended for patients whose bone heights are short. They are also widely used in patients who for one reason or the other cannot put on conventional dentures.
Dental implants are like your natural teeth. They still need good care and treatment to prevent any teeth infections just like your normal teeth.
